Competitive Positioning
Win on what we do. Not on what they don't.
You will hear the names Amplify, HMH, Wit & Wisdom, Lucy Calkins, and Top Score Writing in district conversations. Before you read about any of them, read the next section first. Know what we bring to every conversation. Then learn how each competitor stacks up against it.
Before You Read This Page
Three Rules That Never Change.
Competitive positioning is one of the highest-risk moments in a sales conversation. These three rules apply to every competitor conversation, no exceptions.
Never disparage. Ever.
Do not say a competitor's program does not work, is not real SOR, or is a bad investment. You do not know what results another district has had with another program. Negative claims about competitors make you look insecure and create legal exposure. Differentiation wins deals. Mud does not.
Lead with what we do, not what they lack.
Every point of differentiation on this page is framed as something Flavorful Foundations does, not something a competitor fails to do. That framing is intentional and required. "We include a complete K-12 writing framework" is correct. "They don't have writing" is not.
Let the prospect do the comparing.
Your job is to make sure the prospect has everything they need to make the comparison themselves. Get sample materials in front of them. Walk them through the frameworks. Ask what they are missing from their current program. Then let them draw their own conclusions. That is far more persuasive than any comparison you could make for them.
Know This First
The Flavorful Foundations™ Differentiator Profile.
These are the things that make Flavorful Foundations genuinely different from every program in this space. Not marketing language — instructional architecture. Know these before you walk into any district conversation.
Differentiator 01
Six Proprietary Instructional Frameworks
SAVOR the Text™, SPICE & Sprinkles™, Scoop-Stir-Sizzle™, Word Work Pantry™, Flavor Gaps™, and Socratic Seasonings™ are all proprietary. Every framework has its own instructional language, its own progression K-12, and its own identity. No competitor owns anything like this stack.
Proprietary IP
Differentiator 02
SAVOR the Text™ Teaches HOW to Read
Most programs teach what to read. SAVOR the Text™ is an explicit, systematic framework for teaching students the cognitive process of reading itself — how to approach a text, how to think through it, and how to extract meaning strategically. That is a different category of reading instruction.
SOR-Aligned
Differentiator 03
SPICE & Sprinkles™ Proprietary Writing Framework
SPICE & Sprinkles™ is not a writing add-on. It is a fully developed, proprietary K-12 writing framework with its own progression, instructional language, and cross-disciplinary application. It extends SOR principles into written expression in a way no other program currently does.
Proprietary IP
Differentiator 04
Tri-Level Differentiated Texts in Every Lesson
Every lesson includes Advanced, On-Level, and Below-Level texts tied to the same instructional framework and learning objective. Differentiation is not a supplement, a separate kit, or a teacher responsibility to source. It is built into the lesson architecture from the start.
Built-In RTI
Differentiator 05
Spiral Learning Across All Grade Levels
The same six frameworks deepen and expand from kindergarten through 12th grade. Students never re-learn a new system. Skills, vocabulary, and instructional language build on each other year over year. The coherence is vertical — the whole school speaks the same literacy language.
K-12 Coherence
Differentiator 06
Socratic Discussion Framework
Socratic Seasonings™ is a proprietary critical thinking and discussion framework embedded in the curriculum. Students do not just read and write — they learn to construct and defend ideas in structured academic conversation. Discussion is not an activity. It is a framework with its own instructional progression.
Critical Thinking
Differentiator 07
Cross-Curricular by Design
The frameworks — particularly SPICE & Sprinkles™ and Socratic Seasonings™ — are built to transfer across every content area. Science teachers use them. Social studies teachers use them. The literacy investment extends beyond ELA into every classroom in the building, which changes the value calculation entirely.
Whole-School Impact
Differentiator 08
Culturally Themed Curriculum, Intentionally
The culinary theme is not decoration. It is a culturally inclusive instructional design choice that connects every learner to the material through food, family, and shared experience. The texts, the metaphors, and the frameworks are built around a theme that crosses cultural backgrounds without centering any single one.
Culturally Inclusive
Differentiator 09
Portable and Device-Independent
Flavorful Foundations is designed to work in any environment. The hybrid model pairs the Digital Kitchen™ platform with physical materials including the Literary Journal so that instruction does not stop when a device is unavailable. Districts with uneven device access do not have to choose between digital and rigorous.
Hybrid Model
Differentiator 10 — Use After the Core Program Is Covered
Seasoned Verse™ — Nobody Else Has This
Running alongside the full curriculum from kindergarten through 12th grade is a dedicated Grammar Poetry Strand — two types of original poems written specifically for Flavorful Foundations. Grammar Poems teach grammar concepts through verse so students embed the instruction in memory through rhythm and imagery, not rules and worksheets. Elements of Literature Poems teach both poetic forms and literary elements — setting, plot, character, theme, conflict — through the same medium. Both strands are spiral: a concept introduced simply in kindergarten returns with greater depth and expectation in middle school and again in high school. The complete poem collection is also being developed as a standalone published poetry book — a low-barrier entry point into the ecosystem for districts, teachers, and homeschool families. No competitor has a K-12 grammar poetry strand of any kind. This is original intellectual property. Full details, poem examples, and the complete talking point are at /seasoned-verse.

Program 1 of 5
When a District Says They Use Amplify.
Amplify is one of the most widely adopted SOR-aligned reading programs in the country. It is well-funded, well-known, and in a lot of districts. Here is what to know and how to position against it without picking a fight.
Amplify
Reading Program / ELA Platform
Widely Adopted
What to Know About Amplify
Amplify is primarily a reading program. Its core product, CKLA, is phonics and knowledge-building focused in early grades. It is widely considered SOR-aligned and has significant research backing.
Amplify is a technology-heavy platform. Districts with device access tend to adopt it comfortably. Districts with limited device access sometimes struggle with implementation.
Writing instruction is not a core strength of the Amplify product. Districts using Amplify often supplement with a separate writing program.
Amplify does not include a structured academic discussion framework or cross-curricular writing system. Its use stays largely within ELA.
Texts are not differentiated by level within the same lesson. Teachers must source leveled materials independently for students significantly above or below grade level.
Amplify is a large company with an enterprise sales model. It is not a founder-led organization and does not carry Black-owned or woman-owned designations.
Where Flavorful Foundations Differentiates
SAVOR the Text™ teaches HOW to read. CKLA teaches phonics and builds knowledge. SAVOR the Text™ is a proprietary framework for the cognitive process of reading itself — how students approach, think through, and extract meaning from a text. That is a different and complementary layer of reading instruction.
Writing is fully integrated — and proprietary. SPICE & Sprinkles™ is a complete K-12 proprietary writing framework built into the curriculum. Districts using Amplify are almost always paying for a separate writing program. With FF, it is already there and already connected to the reading instruction.
Tri-level texts built into every lesson. Every FF lesson includes Advanced, On-Level, and Below-Level texts tied to the same objective. No supplemental sourcing. No separate bins. Every student accesses grade-level thinking at the right entry point.
Cross-curricular by design. The frameworks — especially SPICE & Sprinkles™ and Socratic Seasonings™ — are built to transfer into science, social studies, and every content area. The literacy investment extends beyond ELA into the whole school.
Portable and device-independent. The hybrid model combines the Digital Kitchen™ with physical materials. If devices are unavailable, instruction does not stop. Amplify is built for screens. FF is built for learning in any environment.
Built-in PD ecosystem and AI support. The Instructional Kitchen™ and PD Pantry Assistant™ provide ongoing, curriculum-specific PD. Chef's Chat™ provides mid-lesson AI support for teachers. Not a one-time onboarding event.
Program 2 of 5
When a District Says They Use HMH.
HMH (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) is one of the largest traditional publishers in K-12 education. Its Into Reading program is widely used. Districts that use HMH are often working with a familiar, established product but may be questioning its SOR alignment or feeling the weight of its complexity.
HMH (Into Reading)
Traditional Publisher / Basal ELA Program
Legacy Publisher
What to Know About HMH
HMH Into Reading is a comprehensive basal ELA program used across thousands of districts. It is familiar, committee-friendly, and comes with significant publisher support resources.
HMH has faced scrutiny regarding the depth of its SOR alignment. The program has been updated in recent years to address this but the instructional design is not built from the ground up on SOR principles the way Flavorful Foundations is.
HMH is a very large program. Teachers often describe it as overwhelming in scope and complex to navigate. There is a lot of material and not always a clear path through it.
HMH provides some leveled reader sets but they are separate components, not embedded within the same lesson framework. Differentiation is an add-on, not structural.
There is no spiral framework system that builds consistent instructional language across all grade levels. Instructional language and approach can vary significantly year to year.
HMH does not have a built-in professional development platform specifically designed for teacher growth in the way the Instructional Kitchen™ is designed.
Where Flavorful Foundations Differentiates
SOR alignment that is structural, not retrofitted. Flavorful Foundations was built from the ground up on Science of Reading principles. The alignment lives in the lesson architecture, not in updated packaging.
Six proprietary frameworks. Consistent instructional language. K-12. Every teacher and student uses the same six frameworks from kindergarten through 12th grade. Skills spiral upward. No one re-learns a new system at the start of each year. The language is consistent across every classroom in the building.
Differentiation is structural, not sourced. Advanced, On-Level, and Below-Level texts live inside the same lesson. Teachers are not navigating separate leveled reader kits. Every student works within the same framework at the right entry point.
Socratic discussion is built in. Socratic Seasonings™ gives students a framework for academic discussion that HMH does not provide. Critical thinking and oral language development are not activities — they are a structured instructional system.
Built-in PD ecosystem. The Instructional Kitchen™ gives teachers a professional development pathway specifically designed for this curriculum. Not generic training. Curriculum-specific growth that follows the teacher through every unit.
Program 3 of 5
When a District Says They Use Wit & Wisdom.
Wit & Wisdom from Great Minds is a knowledge-building ELA curriculum that has grown significantly in adoption over the past several years. It is content-rich and discussion-oriented. Districts that use it tend to be academically ambitious. Here is how to position alongside it.
Wit & Wisdom
Knowledge-Building ELA Curriculum
Growing Adoption
What to Know About Wit & Wisdom
Wit & Wisdom is a content-rich, knowledge-building ELA program focused on complex texts and academic discussion. It is rigorous and has earned strong reviews from academically demanding districts.
Wit & Wisdom is reading-heavy. Writing instruction is embedded but not a standalone proprietary framework with its own K-12 progression the way SPICE & Sprinkles™ is.
Wit & Wisdom is known to be teacher-prep intensive. The lessons require significant preparation and content knowledge. It is not a ready-to-use program in the way FF is designed to be.
Differentiation is a significant challenge. The program uses complex anchor texts without embedded leveled alternatives. Teachers must independently scaffold for students not yet reading at grade level.
Wit & Wisdom does not include a built-in digital platform, AI teaching assistant, or professional development ecosystem of the type the Digital Kitchen™ and Instructional Kitchen™ provide.
Where Flavorful Foundations Differentiates
Ready-to-use structure without sacrificing rigor. FF delivers academic rigor with a clear, teacher-friendly lesson structure. Teachers do not need extensive prep time to teach the curriculum effectively. The six frameworks — including a Socratic discussion framework — do that structural work for them.
Differentiation is built into the lesson. Every FF lesson includes three text levels. In Wit & Wisdom, a teacher with a wide range of readers must independently source and scaffold. In FF, those alternatives are already there and tied to the same objective.
A proprietary writing framework alongside the rigor. SPICE & Sprinkles™ is a complete, structured, proprietary writing system with its own K-12 progression. Writing extends SOR principles across every subject, not just embedded in ELA units.
Spiral learning that builds consistently. The same six proprietary frameworks deepen across all grade levels. Wit & Wisdom units are rich but the instructional language does not carry the same vertical consistency that FF's spiral structure provides.
Technology, AI infrastructure, and cultural inclusivity. The Digital Kitchen™, Chef's Chat™, and PD Pantry Assistant™ provide a platform ecosystem W&W does not have. And the culinary theme ensures every learner sees themselves in the material — not an add-on but a foundational design choice.
Program 4 of 5
When a District Says They Use Lucy Calkins.
Lucy Calkins' Units of Study was one of the most widely used writing programs in the country for years. It has faced significant scrutiny regarding its SOR alignment, and many districts are actively looking for a replacement or supplement. This is one of the highest-opportunity competitive conversations you will have.
Lucy Calkins / Units of Study
Writing Program / Reading Workshop
High Replacement Opportunity
What to Know About Lucy Calkins
Lucy Calkins' Units of Study was the dominant writing program in many districts for over a decade. It is workshop-model based and has deep roots in progressive literacy instruction.
The program has faced significant public scrutiny regarding its alignment with Science of Reading research, particularly in phonics and foundational skills. Many state education departments have removed it from approved curriculum lists.
The workshop model does not include a proprietary reading framework, a structured academic discussion system, or a cross-curricular extension design. Writing stays in writing. The impact stays in ELA.
Differentiation in the workshop model is largely teacher-directed and conference-based. There is no embedded leveled text structure.
Teachers who have taught with Lucy Calkins for years may have strong loyalty to the workshop model. Any replacement conversation needs to acknowledge that experience respectfully.
Where Flavorful Foundations Differentiates
A proprietary SOR-aligned writing framework, not a workshop replacement. SPICE & Sprinkles™ is not a one-for-one swap for the workshop model. It is a complete proprietary K-12 writing framework built on Science of Reading principles — with structure, instructional language, and a spiral progression that the workshop model never had.
SAVOR the Text™ adds what was always missing. The workshop model never included an explicit framework for how to read. SAVOR the Text™ gives students the cognitive tools for approaching a text that the reading workshop assumed they would develop on their own.
Differentiation is embedded, not improvised. Every FF lesson includes three text levels. Differentiation in LC depends on the teacher finding the right conference moment. In FF, every student enters the lesson at the right level automatically.
Cross-curricular reach from day one. SPICE & Sprinkles™ and Socratic Seasonings™ are built for every content area. The writing investment in FF does not stay in ELA. It follows students into science, social studies, and independent work across the building.
Spiral K-12 coherence. Six proprietary frameworks deepen from kindergarten through 12th grade. Students carry the same instructional language from their first lesson to their last. No new system every few years.
Program 5 of 5 — Florida Market Priority
When a District Says They Use Top Score Writing. Florida
Top Score Writing is widely used across Florida schools as a structured writing program aligned to state test expectations. It is formulaic by design and teachers often appreciate its simplicity. The conversation here is not about replacing something broken — it is about expanding what writing instruction can be.
Top Score Writing
Structured Writing / Test-Prep Writing Program
Florida Priority
What to Know About Top Score Writing
Top Score Writing is a structured writing program with strong adoption in Florida, designed around a formulaic paragraph and essay framework aimed at state writing assessment performance. Teachers and administrators often find it easy to implement and grade.
The program's strength — its formula — is also its ceiling. The structured templates prepare students to score on tests. They are not designed to develop authentic, transferable writing skills across content areas or writing types.
Top Score Writing does not have SOR alignment, a proprietary framework, a reading component, a discussion system, or a cross-curricular design. It is a single-function test-prep tool.
There is no spiral learning design. The writing formula does not deepen or evolve across grade levels the way a K-12 proprietary framework does.
There is no digital platform, AI support, professional development ecosystem, or differentiated text component.
Where Flavorful Foundations Differentiates
Florida B.E.S.T. aligned, by design — and beyond the test. SPICE & Sprinkles™ is built with Florida B.E.S.T. standards alignment. It prepares students for Florida writing assessments while developing the authentic, transferable writing skills that follow them beyond the test into every discipline and every year.
A proprietary K-12 writing framework, not a formula. SPICE & Sprinkles™ has its own instructional language, its own progression, and its own application across all content areas. It is not a template. It is a system that deepens every year from kindergarten through 12th grade.
SOR-aligned writing instruction. SPICE & Sprinkles™ extends Science of Reading principles into written expression. The connection between decoding, vocabulary, and writing is explicit and structured. That is a categorically different kind of writing instruction than test-prep formatting.
Cross-curricular and spiral by design. The frameworks transfer into science, social studies, and every content area. Students do not write only in ELA. They write everywhere, using the same framework, deepening it year over year.
A complete literacy ecosystem, not a single tool. FF includes reading, writing, vocabulary, Socratic discussion, digital platform, AI support, and PD. If a district is using Top Score Writing as a standalone, they are still missing almost everything a complete literacy system provides.

In the Field
When a Competitor Name Comes Up. What to Say.
A
"We use Amplify and we are happy with it."
"That is great to hear. Amplify is a strong reading program. Can I ask: how is writing instruction being handled alongside it? Are teachers differentiating within the same lesson for students at different levels, or is that something they are sourcing separately? And are the literacy skills transferring into other content areas or staying mostly in ELA? Those are usually where a conversation about us makes sense."
H
"We are locked into HMH for the next two years."
"Understood, and I respect that. Two things worth knowing for when that contract comes up: we use the same six proprietary frameworks from kindergarten through 12th grade — so every student and teacher speaks the same instructional language, year over year — and differentiation is built into every single lesson rather than sourced separately. Both of those are usually the gaps districts tell us they did not know they had until they see what they look like. Would it be worth a conversation closer to your renewal?"
W
"We recently adopted Wit & Wisdom and teachers are struggling with prep time."
"That is one of the most common things we hear from districts that have gone that route. The rigor is real but the prep burden is significant, and differentiating for students who are not yet reading at grade level adds another layer. What we offer is the same academic expectations with a clearer instructional structure, tri-level texts already inside every lesson, and a proprietary Socratic discussion framework that gives teachers a system for critical thinking conversations instead of building it from scratch. Would it help to look at a sample lesson side by side?"
L
"We have used Lucy Calkins for years but we know we need to make a change."
"A lot of districts are in exactly that position right now and the teachers who built their practice around that model deserve something that takes their expertise seriously. SPICE & Sprinkles™ is a proprietary K-12 writing framework with its own instructional language and spiral progression — it gives teachers the same ownership in the classroom with a research-backed structure underneath it, differentiated texts built into every lesson, and a cross-curricular reach the workshop model was never designed to have. I would love to get sample materials in front of your team this week."
TS
"We use Top Score Writing and our scores have been fine."
"That makes sense, and test-score results matter. What I would ask is whether students are developing writing skills that transfer into science, social studies, and independent expression — or whether the formula works for the assessment and stops there. SPICE & Sprinkles™ is a proprietary K-12 writing framework that is built to do both. It aligns to Florida B.E.S.T. and the writing assessment, and it gives students a system that deepens every year and follows them into every content area. I would love to show your ELA team a sample lesson and let them weigh in."
