Know the Company — Credentials
Credentials & Certifications
What we can prove. How to say it.
Chalk & Eraser's credentials are not a marketing checklist. They are proof points that answer the questions districts, administrators, and families ask before they trust a curriculum company with their students. Know them cold and know how to use them.

Black-Owned Business
Chalk & Eraser is a Black-owned education company. That identity is not a designation on a form — it is embedded in the instructional design, the cultural philosophy of the curriculum, and the founders' lived commitment to every learner seeing themselves in the material.
Ownership
Woman-Owned Business
Chalk & Eraser is co-founded and led by two women. Both co-founders are active in the day-to-day leadership of the company — this is not a designation in name only. The company reflects their leadership at every level.
Ownership
All-State Standards Aligned
Flavorful Foundations is a portable curriculum. The instructional framework does not change — it adapts to any state's ELA standards. Standards alignment documentation is available for any state upon request.

Credential Detail
What Each One Means. How to Use It.
Each credential answers a specific question a prospect will ask. Know what question each one is the answer to — and lead with the credential when that question comes up, rather than waiting to be asked.
Science of Reading Alignment
Instructional
Science of Reading alignment is the most scrutinized claim in the K-12 literacy market right now. Every publisher says it. Not every publisher can show it at the instructional level. Chalk & Eraser can. SAVOR the Text is a complete SOR-aligned reading system built from foundational phonics in kindergarten through complex text analysis in high school. SPICE & Sprinkles extends SOR principles into writing instruction — which most programs do not do. The alignment is structural, not cosmetic. It lives in the lesson design, not just in the marketing materials.
In a Sales Conversation
"SOR alignment is a claim a lot of programs make. We can show it at the lesson level — in the actual instructional design. I'd encourage you to look at the sample materials and evaluate it yourself rather than take our word for it."
FERPA Compliance
Platform & Privacy
FERPA compliance means the Digital Kitchen platform meets the requirements of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. Student records, performance data, and personally identifiable information are protected. Data is never sold, never shared with third parties for advertising purposes, and never used outside of the educational context for which it was collected. For districts with strict data governance policies — which is most districts — FERPA compliance is a prerequisite, not a differentiator. Having it removes a barrier. Not having it ends the conversation.
In a Sales Conversation
"The platform is FERPA compliant. Student data is never sold or shared. If your IT team or legal department wants to do a full data privacy review, we can facilitate that directly."
AWS-Hosted Infrastructure
Platform & Security
The Digital Kitchen platform is built on Amazon Web Services, the same infrastructure that powers a significant portion of the internet's enterprise applications. AWS hosting means the platform has enterprise-grade security, 99.9% uptime reliability, automatic scaling as the user base grows, and no dependency on physical servers that can fail. For district IT departments evaluating whether a platform can handle thousands of concurrent users across a full school system, AWS hosting is a credible and recognized answer. It is also fully web-based — no software installation required on any device.
In a Sales Conversation
"The platform is AWS-hosted and fully web-based. No installation required on any device. If your IT team needs technical specs, we can connect them with our team directly."
All-State Standards Alignment
Curriculum
Flavorful Foundations is a portable curriculum. The instructional framework — the six core systems, the lesson architecture, the SOR-aligned design — does not change from state to state. What changes is the standards it maps to. That is what portability means: the same rigorous, culturally grounded instruction, aligned to whatever your state requires. Standards alignment documentation can be prepared for any state as part of the evaluation process. No district should hear "we're a Florida curriculum" — because that was never the point. The framework travels.
In a Sales Conversation
"Our framework doesn't change by state — we adapt it to your standards. That's what makes this a portable curriculum. Tell me your state and we can prepare a standards alignment document for your curriculum review team."
Ownership Identity
Black-Owned. Woman-Owned. What That Means Here.
These designations matter beyond procurement checkboxes. They reflect who built this curriculum, what they built it for, and why the instructional philosophy looks the way it does. Here is how to speak to both with honesty and confidence.
Black-Owned Business
Built By and For Every Learner
Chalk & Eraser is a Black-owned education company. That is not a line item on a supplier diversity form — it is a design philosophy. The culturally inclusive texts, the warm instructional tone, the conviction that every student deserves rigorous and engaging literacy instruction — these come from founders who know what it means when the curriculum does not see your child. The culinary theme was chosen intentionally because food is culturally universal and warm. The framework was built to honor every learner's background while holding every learner to a high standard.
In procurement conversations with districts that prioritize supplier diversity, this credential is a genuine advantage. Lead with it when it is relevant. Never lead with it as a substitute for the product.
Woman-Owned Business
Led by the People Who Built It
Chalk & Eraser is co-founded and actively led by two women — Arielle Lawhorn and Aysia Johnson. This is not a designation held by a silent partner or a legacy designation from a previous owner. Both co-founders are present in the leadership of the company every day. Arielle runs operations, strategy, and business development. Aysia brings clinical expertise to the instructional and learning science side of the curriculum. When a district partners with Chalk & Eraser, they are working directly with the people who built what they are buying.
For districts and institutions with supplier diversity requirements or equity commitments, both the Black-owned and woman-owned designations are relevant in the procurement process. Know when to surface them.
In the Field
When Credentials Come Up. What to Say.
1
When IT asks about platform security
"The platform is AWS-hosted, FERPA compliant, and fully web-based. No installation required on any device. Student data is never sold or shared. We can connect your IT team directly with ours for a technical review — that is a standard part of our district onboarding process."
2
When a curriculum director asks for SOR documentation
"We can provide alignment documentation — but I'd actually recommend looking at the lesson materials first, because the SOR alignment is visible in the instructional design itself. Alignment charts are easy to produce. The lesson architecture is where you see whether it's real. Let me get you sample access so you can evaluate it at the lesson level."
3
When a procurement contact asks about supplier diversity
"Chalk & Eraser is both Black-owned and woman-owned — both co-founders are active in the leadership of the company. If your district has supplier diversity requirements, we can provide whatever documentation your procurement process needs."
4
When a district asks about standards alignment
"Flavorful Foundations is a portable curriculum — our instructional framework doesn't change by state, we adapt it to your standards. We can prepare a standards alignment document for your state as part of the evaluation process. Just tell us where you are."
5
When a parent or homeschool family asks about data privacy
"Student data in the Digital Kitchen is FERPA protected. It is never sold, never shared with third parties, and never used outside the educational context. Your child's information stays exactly where it belongs."
